Novice user, only use Qlab for playing audio cues at dance competitions/recitals.

My issue, when we are setting up props on stage between numbers, i would like to play some music to avoid having "dead air' while this is happening. I was able to do this last year using a single audio cue and 2 fade cues, accessed thru hotkeys. The cue ran in perpetuity (infinite loop) and only came up as needed thru the hotkeys...problem is, it was only one cue, and the same audio file gets old. I was wanting to add a series of cues, in a group. then fade in/out the group. The group would need a START cue to go back to the top of the cue list and all the cues would Auto-follow.... I found a couple workarounds, but they do not work. Using Auto-Load got me the closest, but once all the cues have been run, and we get to the START cue to go back to the top, the Auto-load fails. The other option i found was setting the master audio level to -59, and using the relative fade cues of +49 and -49 respectively. This works, but when the audio goes from one cue to the other, the new cue starts at -59... meaning if a cue switched during a pause of the show, the new audio cue would not be heard, unless I trigger the fade in cue...

Is there anything that can be done? Thanks!!

I've gone down this road. Simplicity is best. "Workarounds" get ya into trouble.

I might do what you did the first time, but use an app like REAPER (or Audacity, Protools, ect) to create a longer audio file. Render all the music into one long .WAV file.

I do the same thing with dance recital every year. But the set up you describe works fine. I have a group of auto-load, auto follow audio files all set at -58. My fade up is +45. Fade down -45. Just tested it with last year’s and still works as expected. Next track started at the up level. Your fade cues target the group, right? And the start cue at the end also targets the group -  not the first audio cue. Everything auto loads when it goes back to the top. That might be the problem if you are targeting the first audio cue.

I'm a big fan of James Ard's reccomendation.

I might do what you did the first time, but use an app like REAPER (or Audacity, Protools, ect) to create a longer audio file. Render all the music into one long .WAV file.

If you do want a flexible solution only using Qlab tools you could create a nested list. Each audio track would exist in a separate timeline list that Fades it in and fades it out, then auto-follows to play the next cue. All of the Audio track-lists are then placed in another list, because I like variety, I've made it a "Start Random Child..." list. If you wanted infinite playback, you could add a Start cue targeted for the overall playlist group at the very end.

Well, Thanks everyone for the input. Obviously James's solution is the easiest and will 100% work, only wish I had thought of it!! My intent is to learn how this software works, and was looking for a true QLab solution, without having to join a list of songs together...

Philip, I am still trying this out and not having any luck. any chance you can share that workspace?

Drew, I obviously have a lot to learn with this software. I would be curious to see your workspace as well if you could share it...

Again, thanks for all the help.

One other thought. Did you select auto-load on every track?

Yes, I have Auto-load checked on the group name, and each audio cue. Now my start cue sits OUTSIDE the group, so I might try moving it. is the start cue also auto-load?

Robert, sorry for the delay. I uploaded a copy of the workspace with some audio here. I hope this is helpful!
