QLab 3 and multiple outputs - Focusrite Scarlett 2i4

Hi Everyone,

I use QLab more or less every day for simple stereo audio. I've just bought a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (2 inputs, 4 outputs) and a 1 day Pro Audio license.

Qlab recognises the Focusrite, understands it has 4 outputs, plays happily as larry on outputs 1 and 2, but I can't for the life of me get any cues to play out of outputs 3 & 4. It simply won't do it.

Opening up the patch for the Audio Device (Qlab sees it as Scarlett 2i4 USB) gives me three tabs, Cue Outputs, Device Routing and Device Outputs. As far as I can see, Cut Outputs and Device outputs do nothing other than applying effects onto the outputs. Or am I missing something there?

So in Device Routing, I have the following:

Cue Outputs:      Inputs          Crosspoints

4                          0                                                                0

Firstly, what does that even mean - and secondly, why with this setup am I unable to play anything from outputs 3 and 4?

I have two audio cues. Both with the Scarlett as the audio output patch. 

- Cue 1 shows green levels on outputs 1 and 2 under 'Devices and Levels'

- Cue 2 also shows green levels on outputs 1 and 2. Bringing down the faders for 1 and 2 brings down the sound, but nothing comes out of 3 and 4.

Can anybody shed any light?

The focusrite works perfectly well in Virtual DJ (mapping audio out from deck one to outputs 1&2 and then deck two out to 3&4) and in ProTools it works as expected.

While i'm on the subject, the mic cue in QLab 3 should presumably allow me to play the audio from a microphone coming in from one of the two inputs on the Focusrite. This doesn't work either - with the device selected, no green input lines appear when using a mic cue.

Am I missing something???

Please note - the pro audio license is installed and shows up in the licenses window. It has not expired.

Your matrix is set up to route a 4 channel wav to the 4 outputs. For a stereo wav the first cue output should he matrixed to outputs 1and 3 and cue output 2 should be matrixed to 2 and 4

The matrix in settings is used as the default for new cues.

If you are using stereo cues to stereo outputs a more sensible default than the one qlab provides is to matrix cue output 1 to all odd numbered outputs and cue output 2 to all even outputs. This means that all the faders in the cue are immediately active and cues can be sent at different levels to the outputs using only the faders.

All the above has nothing to do with the edit patch device routing matrix which under normal circumstances should be set 1 to 1. This matrix deals with routing the outputs from the faders in cues to the physical device outputs. 

The matrix I was referring to is the inputs to cue outputs in the audio levels tab of the cue. The attached screen shot screensnapz2 shows what that would look like if you wanted a cue to play at full to outputs 1+2 and at -10 to outputs 3 and 4.

If you are always using stereo cues to stereo outputs your default matrix for new cues in settings should look like the second screen shot screensnapz3

Thanks for this Mic, however I had done something very stupid.

Underneath the faders in 'Device and Levels' are the crosspoints - but I had to scroll down to see these and they weren't immediately obvious. Now that on track two I can properly adjust the crosspoints, everything is working exactly as it should.

I am confused by the documentation and do not have my sound equipment in front of me right now. If I plug Qlab into my mixer with USB, will I automatically be able to control the outputs of Qlab to the outputs of the mixer like I can with a standard DAW?

Can you help me to get my Qlab to play out of the multiple outputs on the Focusrite Scarletti1820 ?  Please I really need some help with this by rehearsal tomorrow...  ALL of my outputs are wired correctly,  however the Qlab is not playing out of them all...   I have 3 stereo outputs...  ( 1 thru 6 outputs on my Scarlet )  and then 7 is my sub send,  and 8 is a mono speaker send, and so is 9.   How do I tell Qlab this ?

The first thing I would check are your cross points. QLab defaults to sending each input track in a 1 to 1 output to each cue output. If your input track is mono your cross points all need to be set to 0. If your input track is stereo then your cross points should be set as follows:

Cue output 1   2   3   4   5   6   7   8   9

Input    

Ch1 0          0   -   0   -    0   -  -6  -6  -6

Ch2 0          -   0   -   0   -    0  -6  -6  -6

Basically for your stereo cue outputs you need to route left to left and right to right. And for your mono cue outputs you need to send a summed mono signal of your track inputs (-6 for each so you don’t end up with a doubled signal which will cause peaking). 

That would be the first thing I’d check.
