I am doing a show where I have 2 macs running Qlab, sending OSC Go commands from Mac1 to Mac2.. During rehearsals I have used a wireless connection that has worked flawlessly but I am nervous about using it for real and want to switch to a wired connection.
Wouldn't the simplest option be to connect the Macs directly with an Ethernet cable? Are there any downsides to using this method?
Is a connection through switch or a router necessary or advisable?
Anything else I need to be aware of?

There is a school of thought that a network switch is a good idea to avoid some negotiation issues, however generally a single cable should work - I would suggest using TCP rather than UDP to make things as reliable as possible

As Long as you use tcp you can use wifi. Think of it this way Udp is like a normal letter you dont know of it will arrive TCP is like a letter with reply „got it“ but just for your safety use a wired Connection and as long as you configure your Network Correct it dosnt matter if you use a Switch or not if you stay below 20 Meter (50 feet) of cable lenght.

Respectfully, this is not telling the whole story.

Regardless of whether you use TCP or UDP, wifi is still susceptible to interference from other radio sources in the area, strong magnetic fields, and even solar radiation. On top of that, wifi itself is designed to bend before breaking, metaphorically, so it has poor timing characteristics.

Ethernet does not have these problems, or not to nearly the same degree.

Do you have a source on the 20 meter limit? I’ve connected Macs together with 100 meters of ethernet and never had a problem.

To the original question, though, connecting one Mac to another directly with ethernet is completely fine and as long as you don’t need a third device to be part of the network, I recommend it.

As to the advice about TCP vs. UDP, on a two-computer network you are not going to encounter the kinds of problems that UDP is known for. I wouldn’t worry.

Best
Sam
