Hello!!

I work with a theatre in education company and we have always used QLAB in our shows. Our plays had videos played (projected via a projector onto a CYC), and we had slides coming up as well as music. We used these resources in our plays cause we do plays for Secondary School students, so they have an education element.

I am not super professional with QLAB, I have a basic knowledge of it, so apologies if I cannot understand much of the heavy technical stuff.

Now with the current pandemic there is no chance of doing any live shows so we have decided to transfer the experience to an online show. We decided to use Zoom Webinar (like normal Zoom but you cannot see the participants, they can see you (due to GDPR and Child Protection Policies it was the best way to go). I am trying to get the Webinars to have some of the audiovisual elements that I used before so I am trying to think how to do that. The most obvious way was to use the Share Screen tool in Zoom and share my QLAB somehow. But obviously since there is no projector anywhere I cannot connect it the way we normally do. I am trying to find a way around and the only solution that I thought was to use the Audition Window. Basically, if I have a show lined up in my Qlab and I have the Audition Window maximised and occupying the whole screen, then if I do a Screen Share from Zoom and choose QLAB - Audition to be shared then each time I press the space bar I move to the next cue in QLAB and this will be shared in my Zoom.

I guess its a workaround way, but its far from ideal. Does anyone know a better way to do this? The support people from Figure 53 recommended:

>For video into Zoom from QLab, I think the best solution is to add Syphon to your video >surface, and use NDISyphon to receive that stream and send it to NDI, and then use NDI >Virtual Input to make that NDI stream into a virtual camera that can be made available >to Zoom.

But I don't understand any of this, it seems too complicated for me! Does anyone have any idea or experience that can share with me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Marcus

Hello

To do as F53 support suggest you would need to download NDI-Syphon from https://docs.vidvox.net/freebies_ndi_syphon.html and NDI virtual input from https://ndi.tv/tools/

You would create your surface as a Syphon surface in qlab - in the surface editor delete all the items under “screens assigned” and then click the + button to create a “Syphon” screen

Once you’ve done this open NDI-syphon and activate your qlab surface which should appear in the list, then open NDI virtual input, it will appear next to the clock in your machine’s taskbar - select the NDI-Syphon source in this.

Finally in zoom, click the up arrow next to the video start/stop button and select “NDI video” - and you will have video from qlab into zoom

If you want to do something more complicated you might want to route the video into OBS where you can then merge the live camera with the qlab source, but that gets more complicated

Marcus have you thought about using something like a ATEM mini? To the computer, it sees it as a webcam and then you can do switching between video sources without having to share a desktop (which is a plus). You can also do video effects like picture in a picture etc. it’s what my business moved to for our zoom meetings.

Just a thought.

I'm using OBS along with NDI tools and an Elgato CamLink to present our children's theatre on Zoom—it's not perfect, but it's usable, although it can be a bit tricky to set up. Have a look:
and

However, I agree that the ATEM mini products look very appealing.

Marcus there is a group that Zooms for two hours every morning in Webinar format that specializes in media presentations and loves to help anyone working in or with schools. You can see past shows on YouTube and I do know they have done 2nd hours on Q-lab and NDI and OBS, but there is no guarantee that the best people to answer your questions will be there every morning.

Office Hours with Alex - https://www.youtube.com/user/alexlindsaypxc/videos

Alex who usually leads this bunch of rebels loves the ATEM products.

Hope this helps,

Fred

P.S. First Post so be gentle….

I'll second the office hours group as being VERY worth joining.  In the description of any of the youtube videos you can get the link to sign up to be on the actual zoom webinar.  In the webinar during the 1/2 hour from 6:30-7:00 am pacific time, they give out an invitation link to the associated Discord community which is also super helpful.  They are focused on video/remote event production for the most part, and many of the folks there come much more from a broadcast/TV oriented world than a theater oriented one, but I listen and ask questions as frequently as I can.  I learn at least one thing every time I join - often MANY things.  If you want to get a bunch of VERY smart people on just about any video or audio production related question, it's an amazing place to do it.
