Hi
After reading Mic Pool's Cookbook article 'A VLAN with a Plan' I would like to set up something similar (but on a smaller scale) in our Community Venue. We currently have QLab, Dante, Eos Nomad and Projection networked via various switches and cabling. It works but
The VLAN looks so elegant by comparison.
Anyway, could Mic possibly confirm that this switch would do the job?
AV Line M4250-10G2F-PoE+ (GSM4212P)
https://www.netgear.com/uk/business/wired/switches/fully-managed/gsm4212p/

Thanks in advance.

I also did not write that chapter, but VLANs are in my territory. You can have all the managed switches you want, but if you don’t have a router that can do advanced routing like that, you’re going to get nowhere. I suggest looking into Ubiquiti equipment - it’s some of the only commercial-level equipment to the individual buyer. If you’re going for a fully rack mounted system, I suggest the Dream Machine Pro with an additional switch if needed.

Happy to help with the initial setup process if needed or give more detailed recommendations.

We use a Ubiquiti Dream Machine UDM SE router here at the Voxel and find it very user friendly and robust. I’m a big fan.

We generally use the Netgear AV range of switches but would agree the ubiquiti stuff is much more user friendly

I’ve also had success with the zyxel range - it’s more budget friendly but was nice to configure and seem to work well with Dante (haven’t tested with NDI)

To most directly answer your question:

YES, that Netgear AV line of switches can do the job. In fact, the cookbook chapter uses a Netgear AV switch as the example, so you’re likely to have an easy time following along.

I also agree that the Netgear config software is not the easiest. I like Ubiquiti and Luminex switches for a lot of reasons including their easy-to-use software. The Luminex stuff is especially fast and easy, but boy oh boy is it expensive.

Good luck
Sam

Hmm… I’m not alone in having successfully toured NETGEAR AV Line switches without any router hardware for multiple VLAN networks for several years. They have some Layer 3 capabilities, so you don’t need a router – see the datasheet. We used to do this with Cisco 350 Series too; again no router required.

Having said that, Ubiquiti is cheaper: you pay a premium for the NETGEAR limited lifetime warranty (Ubiquiti has 2 years) and AoIP-optimised default configuration. You could get an 8-port Ubiquiti "Layer 3" managed switched for 1/3 of the price: https://techspecs.ui.com/unifi/switching/usw-enterprise-8-poe?subcategory=all-switching.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. I'll also look into the Ubiquiti option.
