In all of your experimentations with Zoom and QLab has anyone worked out how to force the frame rate that Zoom captures at to match the mains frequency so that you don't get strobing from fluorescent lights?

I'd like to be able to set it to 25fps here in the UK but can't seem to do it…

Thanks.

That's weird

I just recorded my  cameras (built in and Logitech 920) and the .mp4 recording on my local drive is a 25fps recording.

Maybe I'm misdiagnosing it? It looked like a very familiar issue I've had to fix before by downloading the Logitech app and setting that camera to "50Hz".

I wonder if the Zoom frame rate may be a function of bandwidth? The other end is Windows too, which rules out a few fixes I'd normally try.

I might try recording the meeting and see what frame rate I get. It seems like we might just have to live with sub-optimal picture.

Thanks.

I believe the frame rate is zoom is variable based on bandwidth. You can view it’s current rate in the settings panel.

Normally on a modest line it seems to hover around 18fps but on a good line I’ve had it running at 30fps.
Jitter being a big factor in the overall determined frame rate it would seem.
Goes without saying a cables connection always seems to do better than wireless.

I haven’t experienced any strobing of Fluorescents in my 2020 zoom life.

Are the ballasts magnetic by any chance? That might account for it as modern electronic ballasts don’t suffer from the same affliction.
(Never work on a lathe or other spinning machinery that is sync’d to the same phase as the magnetic ballast fluorescent lighting! It doesn’t look like it’s spinning even when it is!! Danger) 😅

Zoom frame rate (and resolution) is variable and not controllable in any way I’m aware of.

This is different though to the frame rate of the Video recording that Zoom writes locally to your selected storage device. For me this is always 25fps, which presumably is potentially another source of moire effects, with the interaction of a variable camera  rate and the conformed constant rate of the video, recording.

Having said that, I like Dom have never seen any pronounced strobing from any participant in Zoom calls I have been on.

Some webcam software does include antiflicker features with settings for 50Hz or 60Hz. I use webcam settings.app for my Logitech C920 cameras with that feature, although again, it doesn’t seem to do much with the lighting use.
