Hi Team,

I am planning to develop a new tutorial focused on Atlas generation in QGIS to share with the community.

The tutorial aims to provide a comprehensive guide for users looking to automate their map production. I plan to cover the following key areas:

Basics of Print Layout: A quick refresher on setting up the environment.

Layer Styling Challenges: Addressing specific issues related to page size, scale-dependency, and maintaining visual consistency across multiple automated maps.

Atlas Configuration: Best practices for setting up the layout to be fully compatible and responsive to Atlas coverage layers.

Advanced Tips: Handling dynamic text and automated filtering.

Before I dive into the drafting process, I wanted to check if anyone else in the group is currently working on a similar topic or if there is already a tutorial in the pipeline that covers these aspects. I’d love to avoid any duplication of effort and ensure this adds fresh value to our collective resources.

Looking forward to your thoughts and any suggestions you might have.

With regards,

Hi Sudarshan,

I have an Atlas tutorial that covers the basics https://www.qgistutorials.com/en/docs/3/automating_map_creation.html. There is also one in the QGIS documentation https://docs.qgis.org/3.40/en/docs/training_manual/forestry/forest_maps.html

So instead of a basic tutorial like these - one that covers more intermediate/advanced topics would be welcome - particularly - as you mentioned, "Layer Styling Challenges" - handling dynamic page layouts (portrait vs landscape, dynamic size of legend, adjusting positioning based on content etc.).

Hi Sudarshan,

Thanks again for your submission of this proposal of this tutorial and as Ujaval says an advanced tutorial would be really helpful.

Before we drafted the guidelines for the proposals (in terms of posting in Google Groups), Ark Arjun had also proposed to write a tutorial on Atlas (as Atlas he also uses at the end of his case study that is now published here on the India QGIS website).

Perhaps you both could coordinate (Arjun's mail is added here) and Arjun could perhaps also write here what specifically he had in mind.

If you have any questions and/or need any clarification before putting more specifics on any proposal in this group, please feel free to reach out to the content and review team (we do not have a separate e-mail for this group, but you can send it to any or a few from this team).

Thanks,

Ellen

Dear Ujaval and Ellen,

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback and for sharing the existing resources.

Regarding Ujaval's suggestions: The provided Atlas tutorials offer excellent context. I agree that focusing on intermediate and advanced topics is the most effective approach. I will ensure the tutorial prioritizes "Layer Styling Challenges" and dynamic print layouts, specifically addressing portrait versus landscape orientations, dynamic legend sizing, and content-based automated positioning.

Regarding Ellen's suggestions: Thank you for the introduction to Arjun’s work. I will reach out to him shortly to coordinate our efforts and ensure our content is complementary for the community.

I look forward to refining this proposal and sharing a detailed outline soon.

With regards,
