Hi Everyone,

There was a lot of interest in translating the QField app interface to Indian languages on the Telegram group so starting this thread (with the mailing list in cc) to discuss how we start the work and coordinate with the QField team.

The translations are done via Transifiex. See the documentation at https://docs.qfield.org/get-started/how-to-contribute-translation/

We can request the QField team to enable the languages that we are interested in and add the relevant people as translators for each language.

For now, the following people have expressed interest

Kannada - Prashant, Raghavendra
Hindi - Kiran
Gujarati - Kiran, Arjan
Marathi - Janhavi, Amol, Sudarshan
Malayalam - Ark Arjun
Tamil - Aravinth
Bengali - Sutapa

If others on the mailing list are interested, they can join as well.

It will help if we have 1-2 people from this group who can volunteer to coordinate this project. This will involve ensuring everyone gets access, understanding the translation guidelines and sharing with all the members, adding/removing members, and sharing the project update with rest of the user group periodically. It will help if you have previous experience with Transifex and/or have done software translations.

Please let us know who all would like to help with the coordination and I'll connect you with the QField folks.

Dear community members,
I have been using QGIS (previously Quantum-GIS) for more than 15 years.
If allowed, I would happily volunteer to contribute for the translation in Hindi
I am involved in Scientific Translation of various docs, pertaining mainly to nuclear energy, in easy to understand Hindi.
Many times, the exact Hindi translation is not required, wherein we can keep the commonly used English words.

sincerely,

Hi Ujaval,

I'm interested in contributing to the Tamil language translation for QField. I have been using QGIS for almost 4 years and currently work as a GIS Associate, so I'm familiar with GIS terminology and workflows.

Please include me in the Tamil translation team.

Best regards,

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Hiral Saraiya, and I am currently working as a Hydraulic Engineer based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Along with my engineering background, I offer professional translation support in the Gujarati language. Since I have strong technical knowledge in hydraulic engineering, water supply, sewerage, and stormwater projects, I can accurately understand and translate technical terms and complex engineering content without losing their original meaning and intent.

I also have practical experience using QGIS for master planning work in Ahmedabad city (Gujarat), which strengthens my ability to interpret technical drawings, spatial data, and planning documents.

I would be glad to support your organization with precise and technically sound Gujarati translation services, especially for engineering and infrastructure-related documents.

Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,
Hiral Saraiya

Everyone - glad to see so much interest in this project. We'll get started on the translations shortly. Aravinth has volunteered to help coordinate this with QField team. It will good to have one more person help. If you are interested in coordinating, please let us know.

Hiral - note that this is a completely voluntary project to help improve the QField app for Indian users. The user group is helping organize the work, but we are not seeking professional services for it. If you'd like to volunteer - please do join the effort.
