Hi everyone 👋

I’m excited to be part of this community! I’d love to contribute and volunteer in any capacity the group may need. I’m currently working as a Software Engineer, so if there are any volunteering opportunities aligned with development, tooling, automation, or technical contributions, I’d be happy to help. That said, I’m equally open to supporting in any other way as well.

I also wanted to seek some guidance from the community. I’ve recently joined a Geospatial Intelligence company and am quite new to the GIS domain. While I have a strong software development background, my GIS knowledge is still at a very basic level. I’m really interested in going deep into this field and becoming a strong developer with solid geospatial understanding.

Could you please suggest:

  • How to start learning GIS from scratch to an advanced level?

  • Any recommended resources, roadmaps, or hands-on approaches?

Additionally, there’s an ESRI India Developer Summit coming up, and my company has asked if I’d like to attend. Given that I’m still a beginner in GIS, I’m a bit unsure — would this event be beginner-friendly, or should I build more foundational knowledge first?

Would really appreciate your guidance 🙏

Thanks in advance!

Hi Kushal,

Welcome to the QGIS India community. Your skills will be helpful in helping with our website development. If you want to help, take a look at our open bug queue and let us know if you want to contribute with a PR. https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-UG-India/issues

As you are new to GIS - I'd suggest following the resources from my open courseware repository
  • Start with the A Practical Introduction to GIS video to get familiar with concepts like Projections, Datum, CRS etc.
  • To learn how GIS is used in practice to solve real problems, work through my Introduction to QGIS course. This is perfectly suited for beginners and will give you a good context on how to work with spatial datasets for mapping and analysis.
  • If you want more hands-on practical exercises, continue learning with our QGIS Tutorials and Tips which has 40+ tutorials curated for different levels.
There are many more QGIS resources created by members of the QGIS India Community, and you will find them at https://in.qgis.org/learning-resources/

I have never been to an ESRI Event - so can't say whether it will be worth it for you. But I know several of our group members work on both ESRI and open-source systems and may have suggestions.
