Custom Locator preSelectionHighlight/hover color

to Python Programming for Autodesk Maya

Does anyone know if its possible to have a custom locator that changes color on hover like how the component preSelectionHighlight works? Looking at M3dView.DisplayStatus hasn't given me a status to use.
