Hey all,

Just dropping another note about my department hiring again. We are looking for mid to senior level pipeline developers, for the Production Engineering department.

They don't have an official posting for it on the wetafx jobs page, but the qualifications would be those with strong Python backgrounds. C++ is a bonus. Our department handles the general pipeline between all departments. Software/Services like the render farm technology, asset management, data management tools, IO tools, version and publishing, review tools, and also department-specific products/solutions as required.

Heya Justin,

Just some general queries to the list for anyone in the same boat as me, (I'm finishing up on another project soonish) - was just wondering when you're looking to get bodies in if there's any particular timeframe?

Also, more for a general level of curiosity, can I ask what kind of shop you run over there in terms of tools and tech your department would generally run with? C++/Python (and I presume PySide - let me know if I've presumed badly) obviously, but was just wondering if there's much use of other languages, or any other standout tools that production engineering works with on a regular basis across the facility.

I'm pretty sure they would be looking for people that are available over the next couple months.

There are a couple different departments that write code at Weta. One is focused on Research and Development, working on larger projects that may implement white papers, applications that deal with rendering, etc, and extensively use C++. Another department focuses on Web services specifically servicing the Production needs and serving official Production tracked data.

Production Engineering is the general facility pipeline department, which glues together all of the other departments and workflows. We primary have products written in Python, but our team is pretty diverse. We also have C/C++/Java/Go/JavaScript/Perl(legacy) code that we write and maintain. It comes down to the write tool for the job, and the team is pretty open to being introduced to new ideas. Not everyone knows everything, but if you are looking to improve on a specific area, then it is usually not a problem for you to get onto a given project that offers what you want.

We also have a pretty diverse stack of tools. PySide/PyQt, various Web frameworks like bottle/flask/tornado/Spring(java),  messaging frameworks like amqp/0mq, databases like postgres/mysql/elastic/sqlite
Team members may choose to demo/share new tools or just use them successfully to make a case.

I would say it is a good place if you like a challenge and want to learn more. It is such a large facility that when you write code, you have to consider that 1000+ people may be using it, and it may be used on the render farm. It could be a service that will get pounded by 60k+ cpus or a tool that will pound on some other service, or the filers.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Oh yea, and you have to also like good coffee, and learn to work an espresso machine.

You guys have an Espresso machine! that's a big plus!
if I may rant for a second, Canada have lots of great things that I love, but coffee isn't one of them this awful thing they mistakenly call coffee is "drip coffee". it's not my morning friend

I was excited when I found out that New Zealand is a country of coffee snobs. You can't even find drip coffee unless it's a gimmick. Even MacDonald's has an espresso machine.
My first day at work, my department lead trained me on how to use the espresso machine, before anything else.

He must have had enough of seeing the machine being jammed quite often :)

Jammed? Does that happen often? I know they have people that come in to maintain the machines and calibrate the grinders. It hasn't jammed on me yet.
Maybe it's like a right of passage, where to become a man you have to make your own "flat white" .

I thought it did but you're putting me the doubt now. What's sure is that it would never stay out for long!
Anyways, I hope you guys will find someone!

Maybe it was a photocopier he mistook for an espresso machine?

Australia also has a healthy coffee culture, it'd be difficult to find a post-house that doesn't have a machine or 3. All you python devs, keep an eye on the Animal Logic website, and practice making soy piccolo's...
