We created a Maya proposal group for Q&A. For programming or whatever we need.

Let me explain what this is:

Check the Blender site, already running as beta, to see how this could be:

If you are bored of searching answers to your questions for minutes, finding wrong answers, searching through long threads of hundreds of messages...
Even finding out there was no answer to the actual question at all...
Or if you use stack overflow for programming or just software questions.

If you think having these is useful:
- Question and answer votes down and up, best solution the first.
- Correct answer vote (which a forum like CGTalk doesn't have)
- User status, notification of answers and status of the question.
- Question filters, tags
- Gamification (that way, people have reputation from answering and helping, so you know If you can trust somebody who helps you out)
- Bounties (giving reputation to anybody who answers your question. That is great when it is important for you to get the answer fast)
- etc...

We are in the first phase. The second phase will be a phase where we will need former users of SO (at least 200+ reputation). But for the moment everybody is welcome.

All we need from you is
- Join the stack exchange group and vote up the proposal to be involved
- Vote up any "example" question you think should go into the group.  Use all your votes if posible.
- Add more example questions. We need 40 questions having 10+ votes to the next level.
- Stay on board, don't forget!

They say this takes a year or so. We can make this faster if you help us out!

Plase share!
I'll write again in some time to remind you. :-)

I followed and upvoted what I could. I have a suggestion though. I noticed a number of the example questions you created were "polling" questions. From my experience on SO, those types of questions don't always do so well. The ones that tend to have the most votes are very focused questions that have concrete answers, as opposed to opinions.
Just a suggestion.

Good luck with the process!

This is a good idea. Though it's a direct competitor to this group. :(

Not necessarily a direct competitor. Stack Overflow has kind of a strict protocol about asking perfect questions and making perfect answers. It's not really acceptable to just have a loose discussion. That is what our list is for.

That's true, didn't think of that. :)

Yeah. Of course. It's not the same. And it is for Maya, not just python for maya :-) .

About the kind of questions, well, for the first phase, it is just nonsense, I added any question so that everybody voted. They are obviously maya related questions, they need to decide which kind of questions should be asked when you propose something crazy and they are not sure what you want. A group about Maya is easy, I even told them to bring it to the next phase directly. It is well known what is this about. But they rejected my proposal...

So we have to do this. Is boring, and takes time, that's why we need your help!

As much as it is a good idea, and one might think it should circumvent the standard initial phase... you can see the point in it with the example questions. If half of the example questions are polling questions, then it would prove that it might not be a good fit for the SO format. You can see the kinds of questions that get down voted or closed in the existing groups. Clearly the topic has to be able to produce questions that can have definitive answers. So if more of those kinds of example questions get added, then hopefully it will be accepted. Whoever wants this to succeed will need to contribute examples that meet the proper SO format.

Do you have a board/wiki/redditsub/manifesto or something to roughly flesh out what you're expecting to see on the maya.SE site, or are you wanting to bash that out via the area51 proposal?

I forgot to answer these e-mails!

I don't have any manifesto... I just want Blender's stack exchange style for Maya. Just a software related forum, with all those pros given in my first post.
I think i should write the manifesto, which is the same I sent to you over here,I guess...

And to Justin, well. You are right, polling questions are not ok. I was writing as many questions as possible. It is easy to understand what this forum would talk about. It's easy. I just wrote those without having any clue of how that worked.

I think It won't work at all. This way is really slow and discouraging. But we will still be there, waiting... I don't want to bother people... but how do you make people use a system they don't know, moreover, a system that gives no answers, with no PRO users except the users of stack overflow (so, programmers)... That's not the point.

Thanks anyway!
