Yeah, it was a good read, but I've got mixed feeling about it.
Up front, I found the title misleading. It's more so a collection of interviews stitched together by the author (who incidentally isn't in VFX herself, but is a reporter or sorts) as opposed to an overview of fundamentals; a title suited better for a book written by a pipeline architect, or at least someone with a holistic understanding and experience in the field.
I also found it biased towards Shotgun; possibly due to some of the interviewees being Shotgun developers. Parts of it feeling like reading their manual, like going on about specific fields in their database schemas.
Having said that, it does contain some very good and very current info. As this is essentially the only book out there on the topic, I would consider reading it mandatory for anyone interested in pipeline dev. If we disregard that however, I would more likely consider it fair, a little bit too heavy on how things work today as opposed to touching on alternatives; in short, a great history lesson on what has already been done, with the occasional bias and lack of perspective on some of the interviewees.
Best,
Marcus
