get verts effected by influence

I have a custom skinning tool and i would like to visualize weight influences with vertex colors.

However, the only method to query them seems to select them (skinCluster, selectInfluenceVerts)

Is there something more efficient? Is there a better way of visualizing skin weights than vtx colors?
