Changing the color of Shelf Tabs in the Maya UI

Hi all,

At work the Maya Shelf get's more and more crowded by plugins and other custom Shelfs. I thought it would be nice to change the color of some of the tabs, to mark the most important ones. 

After trying some stuff myself, I'm now stuck. I tried getting the object of the shelf with mayaOpenUi and shiboken2, but I'm not sure if this is the right way in the first place. 

Would be awesome if you guys could give me a hint what to look for.
