Hi all,

After more than a decade we are replacing our failing Bruker Tracer IIISD with the Tracer 5g.

I'm curious what if any Mac emulation software and hardware combinations people have found workable to run the 5g analyzer.

I asked Bruker sales and they essentially said don't do it. One needs an Intel i5 or better yet i7 chip to run the analyzer. But having used Parallels for a decade to run the old unit I doubt that.

The only new wrinkle I can think of is that current Macs have installed Apple's M1 chip instead of the Intel Core i5 chip on my 11 year old MacBook.

Thoughts?

Dennis

Parallels works just fine on M1 macs. You'll need it if you want to use bruker instrument tools or EasyCal. If you just need Artax, then Crossover will run it natively with a wifi connection: https://www.codeweavers.com/crossover. I've been using the latter for years without any problems other than the standard wifi connectivity bugs.

Dear Dennis,

I used to run my Tracer IIISD on Mac / Parallels.

I am now running my new Titan with a very cheap microsoft computer, with Artax and also PyMca.  I tried my new Titan on Mac and some software / plug in did not work but a big proportion of the problems was probably me.  Unfortunately, I would recommend Microsoft.

Best regards,

Yannick

Thanks Lee and Yannick,

It turns out the initial "in-person" setup for the 5g (unlike the IIISD) is actually a remote video session.  So since it will be remote and led by the company rep who doesn't work with PC emulation I'm going to use a Surface 7 Pro. After that we'll also move to setting it up on a Mac with PC emulation for better connectivity with local staff and faculty.

Note for future purchasers:
Past quotes have always charged separately for travel expenses for "in-person" training. That's nothing new. But for us that added expense has increased to $3500 and the separate quote cites up to 5 days needed for that travel. That's in addition to the quotation's standard $2000 charge for the one day of "in-person" training session. I have the impression that while they continue to use that term, "in-person" they are discouraging actual on-site training.

Hi Dennis,
We just purchased a 5g and had in-person training yesterday with Dave Kiefer from Bruker. I believe the charge was ~$2000, and ten staff members attended. We did not pay anything extra for travel or accommodation (however, he was travelling from NC and I do not believe he needed to stay overnight). I am not sure why there would be such a price discrepancy for training.
Sincerely,
