I found a thread from March on puppet-dev (Subject Line: End of Life estimate for Puppet 3.X?)
On which Eric Sorenson said, referring to Open Source Puppet,  "As a practical matter we're going to have Puppet 3.8 on maintenance and security fixes as long as there's a supported PE version that incorporates it."
My question is : How will the EOL of (PE/Open Source) Puppet 3.8 (the last of the 3's!) affect Red Hat Satellite 6.x (which contains/incorporates a customized Open Source Puppet 3.x) ??

Dan,

That might be a better question for Red Hat as they often support bundled/associated EOL products (like ruby 1.8.7) by themselves once the vendor support ends.

Good idea, but I thought I'd ask in both camps.
Thanks.

Dan,
Disclaimer: I work for Red Hat, not on Satellite, and not in a customer facing role: jpryor [AT] redhat.com

Red Hat is not customizing puppet 3.8 in Satellite 6 in any way. Puppet 3.8.x as part of of Satellite 6.2 is supported by Red Hat. It has been publicly stated in presentations at Red Hat Summit titled "Migrating an existing Puppet deployment into Red Hat Satellite 6" and "Red Hat Satellite 6 roadmap and demonstration", that future-version of Satellite 6.3 will have both puppet 4.x and puppet 3.x. And of course all future-looking statements are open to change.

The following link to RH Summit content-portal has the videos but annoyingly requires registration:
https://vts.inxpo.com/Launch/Event.htm?ShowKey=32437

When you are logged into it, then visit "Management Track" and find "Migrating an existing Puppet deployment into Red Hat Satellite 6".

As for the life-cycle of puppet 3.8.x in Satellite going forward, that is a more nuanced product life-cycle  question to be answered by Product Management. You are welcome to follow up with your contacts in RH's Customer Experience & Engagement departments (Sales rep, Technical Account Manager. etc)

I hope that helps,
James

It does, but it does not make any mention of the almost-obsolete Puppet inside Satellite

THAT is the definitive kind of answer I was hoping for.

Many thanks, James.
