Identifying change in file content on subsequent client run

How can  i identify if contents of file are changed or not between subsequent client run?
Need this information for implementing a new resource type
which will do some processing only if the file content is changed.
The file will be created using template resource type.

Is there any way to cache information of previous client run if it is running in cron mode.

This sort of question is best asked in the puppet user group/list. This
group ("puppet-dev") is for development of puppet itself.
