Dear Puppet Developers,

I would like to announce that I am bootstrapping a CentOS Configuration
Management SIG. A SIG (Special Interest Group) is a group in the CentOS
community who focuses on a specific goal.

In this case the goal of the SIG is to get community-build RPM packages
of configuration management tools that would be available to anyone.
Those packages would get extra testing and would be build and tested on
the existing community-driven CentOS Infrastructure.

This project is a unique occasion to bring configuration management
tools closer to the distributions and working together with the
community. This mail is an invitation to join us in this effort to bring
high quality RPM packages for the CentOS community.

Read more about this:

Thanks,

Hi Julien,

I'm certainly interested in this but what's the gain over using vendor packaged RPMs, or the ones in EPEL?

Thanks,

Trevor

Trevor,

Thanks for your interest. First I would like to clarify that this is not
a call against vendor packages, this is an invitation to Puppetlabs to
come and work closer with the community to improve the Puppet rpms.

The gains are several: I expect that if we go for old-fashioned rpms, we
will get smaller packages, it will be easier to update one library, or
even to patch Puppet. It will also improve the integration with other
ruby applications like The foreman.

Puppet 4 has not reached the community yet and building those packages
will also help a lot of people to migrate to Puppet 4, because those
packages would be a lot closer than what existed with Puppet 3.

The EPEL packages are still puppet 3 and EPEL does not bring the ability
to have slotted repositories. With this SIG we could have one repo for
4.2.x, one for 4.3.x so you can get the version that you need.

Bringing that effort closer to the actual community and building the
product with the community will give visibility and probably improve the
overall quality of the code thanks to extra testing that could be made
regarding CentOS.

I hope that contributors and people at Puppetlabs will see the value of
this and will help us to get a better puppet for everyone.

Interesting.

+1 on the slotted repositories.

In terms of Puppet 4, are you looking to split up the AIO packages into more granular packaging? While personally I'm happy to go that way, there was a definite push toward the AIO packaging for various reasons.

Thanks,

Trevor

Hi,

As I have discussed at Config Management Camp, I would like to see
people involved in this initiative. As a reminder, we are creating a SIG
(Software Interest Group = a group of people working around the same
topic) around Configuration Management.

The objective is to build Puppet (and other config management tools)
and the tooling around it for the CentOS distribution, giving easy
access to the latest release to the CentOS community.

Please take a look at my Ignite talk from Config Management Camp:
http://www.slideshare.net/roidelapluie/centos-configuration-management-sig

If you want to join us, please register to https://accounts.centos.org
and provide me your username in a separate email, along with the project
you want to work on (it will probably be Puppet if you read this mail).
Please do so before Monday if you plan to help us.

If you are not familiar with the CentOS build system, that is fine.
There are resource available to jump in, that will be communicated to
the newcomers.

Thank you !

Hi Julien, I'm registered with the same username on centos as I have on IRC: eric0

Have you gotten other responses? What are the next steps you would like to
take on the project?
