Puppet / New Feature PUP-10265
Add 'site-modules' to the environment default modulepath
Issue Type: New Feature New Feature
Assignee: Unassigned
Created: 2020/02/03 11:34 AM
Priority: Normal Normal
Reporter: Sean McDonald

By default, an environment's modulepath does not contain

{site-modules}

. In bolt, that is a default path available to Boltdirs, and when users want to migrate their bolt projects to PE it would be nice if the defaults modulepaths were the same.

Re: Add 'site-modules' to the environment default modulepath

We need product input on this to determine if it should be added or not and if so how it should be prioritized. Right now this seems like a "this would be nice" feature, but not necessarily a customer need or request. It would also change default behavior which implies other unknowns and potentially breaking-behavior?

Coremunity doesn't have its own Product person right now, maybe cc Tara Krishnan can take a look?

Jorie Tappa how much engineering effort do you think this would take?

Follow up questions concerning this:
Why wouldn't we change Bolt's defaults instead? It seems a little backwards to modify Puppet and PE defaults for Bolt's default configuration. Also, if the concern is to get an easier migration path specifically to PE, this sounds like a PE ticket, not puppet.

Any changes we make to the defaults in puppet would be breaking and have larger consequences, so at minimum, this work is Puppet 7 or beyond.

Sean McDonald by site-modules do you mean /etc/puppetlabs/code/environments/<env>/site which is used for role and profile? If so then I think this is a duplicate of PUP-6572
