The long-awaited  "Pro Tools Guide for screen Reader Users" is finally here! This free online resource, made possible through Berklee College of Music features a comprehensive series of tutorials aimed specifically at blind users of Pro Tools. It includes 250 audio demonstrations (totaling 20 hours) with detailed examples to accompany each topic. All of the session files used throughout this series are available to download for reference and practice.

Whether you're completely new to Pro Tools or already use it and want to fill in the gaps, start your journey by going to:

As the process of refining Pro Tools accessibility is ongoing, this online guide will continue to be updated regularly to reflect the most recent improvements to the Pro Tools user interface from the perspective of a screen reader user.

Thanks to Chi Kim for facilitating this project and to Berklee for entrusting me with this massive undertaking. I couldn't have done it without their support. Thanks also to Avid for making resources available during the planning, writing and recording of this project.

Hi Slau. Thanks for the great news about this ProTools guide for screen reader users. Wow, that is awesome! I didn’t know you and Berklee College of Music had been working on this project for a long time. I’ll have to check it out. :-) I know Berklee has come a long way with accessibility and assisting blind students since I graduated in 2004. I’m very thankful I was one of the blind students that encouraged them to start making things accessible for them like music tech and braille music reading when I was there. I think I had  used ProTools version 5  with Mac OS 9 with outSpoken back then, and accessibility has expanded so much since that time.

Hi Katie,

Indeed, accessibility on all fronts has come such a long way. I'm glad to finally be able to share it and will continue to contribute as things develop.

Best,
Slau

Hi, I like these wonderful tutorials a lot.  One demo that I think is missing is the demo on how to change the different mac and Pro Tools settings as all of mine are correct but havving audio demos would be helpful for some users.  I like the quality of the audio content so was just wondering what audio equipment and microphones did you use to record these and how did you go about getting the voice over speech into the tutorials?  Nick Gawronski

For the most part, I did add that stuff in Chapter 19 where I cover Manual Write, Write On stop and the various Write, Trim and Glide to Current commands. Cheers!

Chapter 1 offers the Pre-Flight Checklist which doesn't require a demonstration. If people can't follow those instructions without an audio demonstration, I'm afraid they probably couldn't handle working with Pro Tools. I suppose it's sort of a litmus test :)
Mic was a Neumann U 47 into Millennia HV3D. I have 2 different Pro Tools systems and simply piped VoiceOver into another PT system along with vocal and the interface connected to the laptop.

I hope it helps. Regardless of what support and documentation there is for any given DAW, it boils down to what one feels comfortable with. Pro Tools is not for everyone just as Logic and reaper are not for everyone. My hope is that this will help those who want but especially need to use Pro Tools. either way, I'm glad it's finally here.
Best,
slau
