Adding custom collectors to the node_exporter?

Is there a mechanism for adding custom collectors to the node_exporter? Is it just expected/preferred for users to build it from sources and drop their own collectors into the collector directory, or is there some other API to build custom collectors and add them to an already-built exporter?
