Hello,

Im new to Prometheus and was wondering how reliable is process monitoring that is available in windows exporter.

Could this be used to track process that are produced by a service and create reliable alerting for it?

If not have you used any other exporter/method to track the process?

Thanks and Best Regards

If you want reliable process monitoring the best thing to do is instrument the process directly with a Prometheus client library. Then have Prometheus monitor the process directly.

The next best thing is to write a custom exporter for the process.

This is why Prometheus avoids the "host agent" pattern. Having an agent is a SPoF, which reduces reliability.

Thanks for the info.

Is the process monitoring provided by win exporter any good and can it be used?

The windows exporter is just exposing metrics from various Windows
sources, so they are as good as those different sources.

You won't necessarily get as wide a selection of metrics as you might
get if an application was directly instrumented or has a specific exporter.

It really depends what sort of data you are hoping to find.

If the metrics available from the Windows exporter cover everything you
need, then you should be fine :-)
