Hi All,

I am very new to Prometheus. I have read a few things around Prometheus but yet not clear how Prometheus monitors HTTP/S endpoints. How does HTTP/S monitoring happens in general and how does exporters come into play while Prometheus scrapes for HTTP/S endpoints. I request you to kindly explain these to me.

Sincerely,
MNK

It's the same as for HTTP, except that you have to add a "scheme: https" to the scrape config.

Hi Brian,

Thanks a lot for your note. However, my query was how does Prometheus scrapes HTTP and/or HTTPS endpoints? What is the general mechanism for scraping HTTP and/or HTTPS endpoints? How does exporters come into play while scraping HTTP and/or HTTPS endpoints?

I don't understand your question. Prometheus scrapes HTTP endpoints using the HTTP protocol, and HTTPS endpoints using the HTTPS protocol.

Hi Brian,

I am so sorry. My bad.

Is there anything more than pinging target endpoints over HTTP and/or HTTPS protocol. Is it a simple HTTP and/or HTTPS endpoint pings at the very basic level for monitoring HTTP (HTTPS) endpoints. How does black box exporter comes into picture into this.

Sincerely,
MNK

If you just want to check if an endpoint is up you should use the blackbox exporter. If you want metrics from an application you should have Prometheus scrape it.
