Hi

Prometheus is also under the roof of CNCF. For Kubernetes there are
several prestigious certifications. Nice is that there are separate
courses for admins and developers.

Is something like this planned for Prometheus? Has something like this
already been discussed?

I would be very happy if I could take an exam for Prometheus. I am sure
it will be very good for the resume.

Hi Evelyn,

We discussed exactly this a couple of weeks ago with the CNCF, and we're generally very interested in it. The Prometheus OSS project would have to define standard certification criteria, and then companies (like PromLabs, Robust Perception, or others) could offer training material and administer the certification tests. We just haven't gotten around to it yet, as there is always a lot to do. But I'll check in again with people about it, and hopefully at some point we will manage to build such a certification.

Regards,
Julius

Very good news. I'm glad to hear it. Very glad that you developers
support this. Many developers don't like certifications. What do you
think is the time horizon when appropriate training will be available?

Hi Evelyn,

No worries, yeah, we understand it can be important for organizations' requirements and people's CVs, even if a non-certified training can teach the same knowledge.

It's hard to put an ETA on it currently. We are interested, but still evaluating who will do this, and when. Let me try and get back to you in a couple of days or so.

Regards,
Julius

I'd be very interested in courses for both admins and developers. The main driver being to establish a common framework / baseline understanding around Prometheus training, similar to the Kubernetes certifications. At Sysdig we have internal Prometheus training focused on developers that I'd love to build out further.

Yes we started, but will have a more detailed discussion with the Linux Foundation on Monday. So far it sounds like a realistic expectation of having a certification process in place is around half a year or so.

Hi Julius

thanks.

are there any news from the Linux Foundation or further details? Will
there be a separate Ops and Dev track?

Hi,

(please keep me CC-ed in addition to the list, otherwise I won't notice replies, thus sorry for the late reply)

Yeah, we had a call, and we will look for a number of subject matter experts both within the Prometheus Team and externally who are interested in joining the effort. We need to first put together a blueprint of what the certification should cover (like the outline you see at https://training.linuxfoundation.org/certification/linux-foundation-certified-sysadmin-lfcs/ under "Domains and Competencies"), and then as a second stage, come up with detailed certification question items for a multiple-choice exam that will be administered by the Linux Foundation.

Regarding the tracks, it's up to us in a lot of ways, but it seems like we will build a single certification first to trial the demand, and we still have to determine how to draw the line between user, admin, and developer, because those roles often overlap in the Prometheus use case. If you have opinions on that, do let us know!

Regards,
Julius

1 month later do you have a draft version of the objectives? Can I apply
for training budget 2021 already (Prometheus certification) in my company?

I only hope there is "please write an exporter in GO" type questions ;-)
