Dear Community,

I have a .obj file of a terrain. I would like to create a deformable SCM surface that fits this .obj file shape. Is it possible to do? I cant find any examples for this specific purpose.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Prabanjan

Prabanjan – you do not say what version of Chrono you are using.

The ability to initialize an SCM patch from a mesh has been in there for a while.  A demo that illustrates that is also available in the latest development code in the git ‘main’ branch.

To do that, use the appropriate SCMTerrain::Initialize function.

The latest demo_VEH_SCMTerrain_WheeledVehicle illustrates initialization of an SCM deformable terrain patch as a flat rectangle, or from an OBJ mesh, or from a BMP height-map.

Currently, there is no formal support to mix rigid and SCM terrain patches (but this is something I plan on adding in the future).

Until then, you can still include rigid objects fixed to the global frame with primitive or mesh collision shapes in a system that also has an SCM terrain patch.  The only thing you need to keep in mind is that the SCM (virtual) grid extends to infinity beyond the boundary of the mesh you provide to initialize it (at a height equal to that at the closest mesh boundary); this introduces some limitations in what additional rigid terrain objects you can add and how they are positioned relative to the SCM patch.

Subject: Re: [chrono] Deformable surface from obj file

Thanks that was helpful. I am using chrono release 8.0

Also, Is it possible to create patches in deformable surface? So part of the terrain is rigid and part of the terrain is deformable?  I am modelling a road way where the road has to be rigid and sides of the road has to be deformable. Any advise to achieve this?

Thanks.
