Hello, everyone!

I am getting ready to start discussing White Collar Crimes in relation to Business Ethics and I was wondering if anyone had any fun games to demonstrate things like Insider Trading, Bribery, Fraud, etc.?

Or if someone could point me in a direction, that would be amazing!

Thanks!
Raygan

Hi all,
This game is not insider trading or anything but it is a fun game that makes you the trader- you may be able to modify it?

Hi

To add to David’s suggestion – this is a fantastic active learning approach in class.  I use the approach often.  I teach Animal Science classes, and have had students trade “cattle”, trade ‘parts of the digestive system’ and etc.   Makes for a very engaging activity. Would recommend the approach.  The game is a blast too *( my family often plays it).

This is not my area of teaching. But I have done a good bit of work with game modifications. So, I wanted to chime in here.

Take this as an example. What if you had the students play Monopoly. Make one student the banker. But let them run the bank out of site from the other players. Do you trust the banker? How easy would it be to manage the bank to your benefit--embezzle a little extra money? And even if you didn't have them play the game, it's a pretty fun thought experiment. Most games are based on some sort of trust through the ability to audit the score. If you give that responsibility to one person, without any oversite, you have opportunities for abuse. I would imagine you could do this with almost any game-give one play unmonitored authority to keep score. One other idea, if you are worried that your students are too honest to cheat--give them scenario cards. So, for example, in the Monopoly example, the banker/player gets a scenario. It could say, try to win the game at all costs. It could say, skim a little to give yourself an edge. Or even, play honestly. This sets up different scenarios.

Anyway, great conversation! I'll be curious to see what you come up with!

David

Hi all,
for fraud, I have recently been getting students to play 'Fake Artist' as it is possible to do on zoom or any other online whiteboard. I sometimes introduce extra rules to make it suitable to play in groups in order to learn about the impact of culture. It's useful to ask students about what skills they used if they were the fraudster, and how much non-drawing (e.g. general conversation, asking about the game) or their prior expectations (people won't be very good at drawing, art can be abstract) contributed to their identification of the fraud.
Game idea: Pictionary, but everyone except one competitor is given the word. Spot the fraud!

Another simple one that's useful for discussions of risk-taking among finance students is 'pass the pigs', but almost any push-your-luck style game will do. I like to use it as a basis for students writing up possible market regulations.

Oh and finally, Roberto L Corrada's use of Jurassic Park to teach regulatory law is greatly inspiring here - there's a link to the recording from the Playposium in 2020 here if you missed it!

I have some other bits and pieces I really need to write up!
Best
Laura

That is such a cool game, Laura, and the online version helps (I tried to think of how to do it myself online and I struggled, so definitely cool to have a free version that's pre-made!)

Raygan -

It isn't pre-made, but what about creating or having your students create "choose your own adventure" if you will, walking through various white collar crimes/ponzi schemes, etc with a Google Form? The branching feature would allow for decisions to result in different outcomes, different roles could be assumed as the decision makers, and the "adventures" could be research-based or students could create their own scenarios...

Just a before-dinner-brainstorm :)

These are great ideas, everyone! Thank you! I have the Pit Game ordered and I'll start thinking about modifications and all the other amazing ideas!

Raygan -

Thinking about the PIT game, my mom bought that for our fam so long ago... my idea of the moment, it might be cool to mash it with the concept of "Among Us..."

Sheriff of Nottingham has a good bribery element: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/157969/sheriff-nottingham. You could look under Board Game Geek's tag for "bribery" to find more: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamemechanic/2913/bribery.
