Dear all,

The fourth session of this year's Priberam Machine Learning Seminars will be on April 18 (Tuesday). Our invited speaker will be Luís Correia, a Full Professor of Departmento de Informática and researcher at LASIGE, Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa. He will present his research on multi-agent evolutionary algorithms, illustrated with the evolution of swarm robots and bio-hybrid systems in which robotic devices interact with groups of different animal species.

As usual, the event will occur at 1 PM in Instituto Superior Técnico (room PA2), and we will provide lunch bags for attendees. To learn more about the event and register (which is mandatory if you plan to attend), please follow the link below:

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Kind regards,
Diogo Pernes

Title:
Artificial evolution in the natural world
Abstract:
Evolutionary algorithms (EA) have proved as a robust optimisation meta-heuristic in engineering problems. When we tackle problems in multi-agent systems, the nonlinear interactions set up an increasingly challenging context. And if the multi-agents are groups of animals interacting with artificial devices, whose control is evolved the difficulties are even higher. These occur both in perception when the EA needs to make sense of a collective behaviour from individual ones, and actuation with the uncertainty of how some localised action impacts on the collective. In this talk we will illustrate these problems with evolution of swarm robots and of bio-hybrid systems in which robotic devices interact with groups of different animal species.
Short Bio:
Luís Correia is a professor of Departmento de Informática and researcher at LASIGE, Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal. His research interests are computational artificial life, self-organisation, multi-agent systems, autonomous robots, and data mining. He lectures in the three cycles of Informatics at FCUL, and also in the Cognitive Science and in the Complexity Sciences post-graduation programs of ULisboa. He has had several coordination positions in institutional university boards.
