My apologies in advance for this question, but I can't seem to find the answer. How can one have sections (or subsections) in a preface without throwing something like "PTX:BUG:  development bug, new level does not match old level for 'section'"? (It does still build and looks fine, but was hoping to eliminate these build bugs. (I do know you can have multiple prefaces, and I could go that route, but I would prefer not to clutter up the main navigation with this extra material that I think should be just subsections of the preface.)

I have tried both section and subsection and I get the same "bugs."

Many thanks,
Jan

Not really answering your question, but maybe "paragraphs" in a preface
will do what you want?

Here is an example of what HTML output looks like with a "preface"
that uses multiple "paragraphs":

No need to apologize. Perhaps The Guide needs a better search utility? Hmmmm.

Start here, even if you already have the right answer:

Paragraph

and then

Paragraph
https://pretextbook.org/doc/guide/html/topic-divisions.html#p-351

Thanks @Rob and @Jordancononical.  I sincerely appreciate the help on such a minor thing.

@Jordancannonical, how did you get the headers in those paragraphs?  I tried <title> which did not work at all, and <em> which did not give me a heading. I would be happy to have what you have done in your preface--which tag element did you use?

Second link explains "paragraphs" element. Use a title within.

Thanks, everyone!  I moments ago I realized what David was suggesting... (THANK YOU!)

use "paragraphs" meant use the "paragraphs" tag and not the "p" tag.  I got it working in a way that looks good, and was just going to thank everyone!

Title should work.

For example, here is exactly this construction in APEX Calculus:

Here is the output:
