Hey guys,

Got an email from KansasBand.com announcing this new 3 CD collection. Career-spanning, starting with a new recording of Can I Tell you and working backwards from Absence of Presence all the way to the first album. (Kinda like the concept Rush used on their R40 tour)

Interesting song choices and versions.

e.g. I don't think I'd pick the TftS version of Carry On Wayward Son; I'd take the original from Leftoverture.

However, if I was to include something from TftS I would have picked Song For America or Icarus, which is to my ears are the definitive recorded versions of these songs.

Eddie Trunk was talking about that on one of his SiriusXM shows last week. Didn’t sound like there was anything new in it.

I wish they would release some live shows from the glory days. They must have some stuff in the can.

Twice a  year there is record store day. Over 11 years now. Never a Kansas release.
Many times there are live recordings or some thing released by bands that hasn’t been out before.
I’ve been trying to be an advocate of trying to get Kansas to release something.
I wish I knew who controls that

They've rerecorded "Can I Tell You." That's what's new. It's also interesting that disc 2 is different for Europe than the USA. The European version has songs from Power and ItSoT, but they're not on the American version.

Phil is the boss of the band.
I am in contact with Billy regularly, have told him, but it falls on deaf ears with Phil

I don’t get too excited about live albums anymore, but I’d love to hear a “Kansas Covers” album with input from the fans on which songs to cover – I have a few suggestions I’d like to hear them do…  😊

Apparently, it's not worth it for the band to manufacture something elaborate just for two times a year sales opportunities.

This is later a collector's item and fetches good prices at record fairs, but the band gets nothing out of it.

One time pressings in the 5-10,000 range, Im sure the band makes something.

I know everyone has their favorites but I wish they would have included "Perfect Lover" from their first "Best of Kansas"1984.   While not considered a classic, it did get radio airplay.  Plus, it was co-written by John Elefante who was lead singer at the time.  As most know they dropped the song when they reissued "Best of Kansas".  From my understanding the song helped fulfill a contract obligation for the album.  I do wish they would play the song...or at least some of the riff live and in concert.  My guess is that it was an unhappy time for the band and thus it's buried forever.

You mean they could sell 10,000 copies in just 2 days of sales???

Only in record stores, without advertising and everything?

Has Perfect Lover ever been played live?

I think it is excellent. Fantastic lead vocals, super harmony vocals, brilliant arrangement.

I was thinking Kirshner put an unreleased track on the "Best of" so we Kansas fans would buy the CD.

Which, of course, we wouldn't need otherwise.

I think it would be a good idea to play Perfect Lover live. You could extend it with instrumental parts, and if it doesn't sound exactly like the studio version it doesn't matter.

Anyway, it's worlds better than "Wheels" or "The light".

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of ItSoT myself, but it just seems weird. I assume that's a label thing since those two albums were on a different label than they'd been on before. And I don't really understand the point of another compilation album.

To be honest, every time Kansas releases a new compilation album I kind of “roll my eyes.”  It just seems like another way of selling more albums without doing any additional work.  At least with AFitR they did re-record one song, but it’s not enough for me to purchase it.  I’d rather hear new music – either new material or existing material (covers) re-recorded by the band.  I don’t see why they can’t release a covers / inspiration album – many bands have successfully done this in the past, even including Kansas songs on them (Yngwie Malmsteen re-recorded COWS on his covers album).

Regarding new material, I wonder whether a new album is on the horizon since Zak left the band – it seemed that he was the primary driving force behind the Prelude and Absence releases…

It would be nice if they had picked a different song to rerecord. But I don't see the point of buying another album with the same songs I already have.
An album of new songs would be great. Both of the past two were pretty good. I'm with you on wondering about Zak leaving though.

I presume the point of rerecording Can I Tell You is because I believe it was the demo of that song that led to the first record contract. You'll recall that the demo of Can I Tell You was the first song on the Kansas box set from 1994. By rerecording it for this new collection the current band is paying homage to this vital song in the band's history.

But I'm with you Peter -- there are so many better songs they could have rerecorded. And it is probably not enough to entice me to spend the $$ to get this new collection.

Yeah, a different song would have been a better choice. Can I Tell You isn't all that good of a song. Repeating the same verse three times is annoying, especially considering all the great lyrics Kerry wrote over the years.

I’ve never taken the time to count but I bet there are at least 10 albums of greatest hits/compilations.  Just can’t get excited about this one.  Probably will sell at the souvenir table at the shows.  Phil has a business model that he thinks will get them across the finish line when they decide to quit.

I guess it's worked well enough so far. And he's 72, so I guess you can't teach that old dog any new tricks.

I already wrote this here about "Absence..." :
The problem I have with this album is : at the moment I listen to it, I think "hey it's really really great, fantastic" !
But when it's done, I don't remember any vocal melody or instrumental piece except those where Tom Brislin wrote the music...

And the vocals are always on the same pattern.
If you can remember, sing or whistle bits of the Zak songs, please tell me how you do it... :-)

My understanding is that power and in the spirit of things are on MCA and they didn’t want to give the rights to those songs
Nothing lost to me those were disappointing albums with the great Steve Morse in the band
