So it looks like the rate is pretty big ($300 total, $150 for nonprofit 501c3), just confirming, is POSH the latter?

Hi Judah,

There's no problem with a donation plate or collection.
The rate for LH 37 is $300 for up to four hours unless you're working with a certified 501(c)(3) non-profit group in which case it's $150.
I can send the rental agreement over to you tomorrow.

Also would I be able to set up a donation plate at the event for singers to bring cash to cover the cost or does that present any legal/policy issues?

Thanks! May I ask what the ballpark cost estimate is in the meantime?

Hi Judah,

I do have the space on hold for this event, but it appears we skipped a step.
As I'd mentioned before, there is a rental cost for LH 37 because this is a non-PSU event. There's also a rental agreement I need to put together and send over (which won't take long).

Update: also confirming that the Broadway doors can be unlocked from 6:00 to 8:30 PM (they can close a little earlier  than that if needed since easy arrival is my main concern).

Greetings!

With the Shape Note Singing around the corner next week, I just wanted to confirm a couple of logistical things: would I be able to pick up a key each for LH 37 and LH 75E (or equivalent to get into the Recital Hall backstage for potential extra chairs) at 5:30 the evening of the 26th? I can pick it up earlier depending on when the office closes. I was planning on asking some folks to come at 6 to help set up before the event starts at 6:30. Let me know when you can!

We are not a 501(3) organization.  Although certainly not in the profit-making business.

But since Kev is teaching maybe we can use the Seattle SH status which has 501 (3c) designation.
I’ll send another email to Kev and see what he thinks.

Otherwise, we can try to collect $300 at the door although I’ll be surprised if we get that much ( I think we might bring in $150).   I’m surprised they don’t give PSU students a better rate even if it’s a non-PSU event. I wonder if faculty get better rates.  We have at least one regular singer who is a faculty member at PSU.

Btw, a visiting singer on Sunday donated $20 to contribute to the singing school 😀

Seattle Sacred Harp (PNWSHS, sometimes pronounced pin-swish) does not have 501(c)3 designation, unfortunately.

I thought we were somehow under the umbrella of the Seattle group. You don't have to be a charity (501(c)(3)) to be a non-profit. One is a federal tax designation that means you don’t (generally) pay federal taxes and that gifts made to you are deductible. The other means that you've been incorporated under state law as a nonprofit, not a for-profit, corporation.

If we're not under Seattle's umbrella, then I guess we would be an unincorporated association. But I agree that we are not a for-profit.

PNWSHS is a WA state non-profit charity. We are working on 501(c)3 but won't be there in time for this event. We never formally renounced Portland. Y'all simply stopped needing us to help with your singings.

Sorry, I didn't see the first email in the thread stating that POSH needs to be both a non-profit AND a 501(c)(3).

Judah, do you have any explanation from the staff on why this is a "non-PSU" event?

I'm wondering whether there's a misunderstanding or even just wiggle room here -- if "a PSU event" means an event only open to PSU community members (which would exclude most lectures and arts events on most campuses, so seems unlikely), or one only featuring PSU community members (ditto, unlikely), then sure. But if "a PSU event" means *organized by and for* PSU community members, then this seems like it should fall into the category, as it's being organized by a PSU student, aimed primarily at PSU students and community members, and bringing in "outsiders" largely to teach/facilitate.

It might be worth seeing whether we can avoid the fee entirely by clarifying this.

Very good point! I just emailed Sarah, I will report back with details soon.

Also I wasn’t aware this email address went to everyone on the Google Group, but at least you all get to see my process lol

I agree, Kate-Laurel! This is something we were invited to do, not something we sought out.
