strip-whitespace attribute?

Poking around the polymer github, I noticed that the paper-fab template has a strip-whitespace attribute.  I could not find any documentation on what the purpose of that attribute is anywhere.  Is it a custom attribute?  What does it do and where is it defined?

You can put it on templates to remove textnodes. This is a small optimization in Blink. See also https://github.com/Polymer/polymer/issues/2511.
