How to make iron-image wait for existence of image file before loading (to avoid 404)

I'm looking for the best practice approach to make iron-image wait for the existence of the image src file before attempting to load to avoid 404 error (and not loading the image once it does in fact exist).  Is there capability built-in to iron-image (polymer 1.0+) to handle this scenario?
