Polymer core transitions for animated pages with core list content

I'm essentially trying to evolve the demo messages example into a more real world implementation, including:

• several pages (inside core-animated-pages)
• flexible spacing on the sides of the list
• hero and slide transitions between pages
• separate polymer components for the child pages for modularity

Note in my example I simply copy and pasted the list polymer element and renamed it but in my real app they are different.

I've been really struggling for many hours with this so would greatly appreciate any help.
