core icon 'face' not actually available?

Tried to use the core-item icon="face" however it comes up blank.

Ren,

Did you import core-cons? When working with icons in polymer you also have to import the icons. 

I add the following import to my declarations to tell Polymer where to find the Polymer icons. 

<link rel="import" href="../bower_components/core-icons/core-icons.html">

If you use your own graphic assets, you should use the src attribute rather than icon.

I guess you use polymer version 0.5.3+. Try use icon="icons:face".

I have same problem with "map", have to use "maps:map"
