Fire Maker

Kneeling

before the altar

of river stones,

flint and pyrite,

fungus

in its baked mud bowl,

brush and branches

placed just so,

he intones his silent

inward prayer

Then

takes up the pregnant stones

and strikes like Thor

until

a Spark

floats forth

wavers in the still air

and descends

alighting

aglow

in its fungus bed

Cherishing the tiny life

he gentles it

with the barest wisp

of breath

then passes it

in its earthen cradle

hand to hand

friend to friend

every breath

a prayer

Until

returning home at last

it springs to life

in valiant tongues

of light

And once again

Memory

Deep as humanity

Flings me into

God’s Fire

And all my life

Goes up in flames
