BOTTOM LINE

In a world of distraction and glitter
where silence has no purchase
where the planet is burning and democracy imperiled we turn away
measuring ourselves instead in spoonfuls of data steps taken on our Fitbit tracker
calories counted
hours logged
places visited
likes garnered on facebook
a collection of statistics
like the baseball cards of our youth
catalogued and objectified
like a butterfly pinned to the wall
inattentive to the immeasurables that make us human. Divorced from what is deepest in us
hungry for the next techno fix that promises
beauty, longevity, and abundance
in a world of uncertainty and change
we plod through our dreary lives
devoid of meaning, purpose, and awe
and all that makes for a life
worthy of the inheritance of just being alive.
