Dear colleagues (with apologies for multiple posts this week),

I’m delighted to announce CIEE Kyoto’s Seminar Series, which begins on September 9 with Professor Timon Screech (Nichibunken), delivering our inaugural talk:

In the Realm of the Sixes: Towards a Cultural History of Rokujo/Rokuhara

Abstract:
Rokujō is largely forgotten. Some sections of the street no longer exist. Rokuhara is much visited, as it lies on the way to the Kiyomizu-dera. But the name is gone. Yet these two sites, both containing the meaningful number Six (roku) and lying on opposite banks of the Kamo by today's Matsubara Bridge, were once among the most recognized and important in all Japan.
The lecture will trace the historical and fictional presence of Rokujō (where Shining Genji had his mansion) and Rokuhara (which contains the gateway to the Other World), and their links across the river, from Heian to the present, enlivened with rare visual materials and fascinating anecdotes.
Unless otherwise noted, sessions begin at 18:00 (JST) and run in hybrid format from CIEE Kyoto (6th Floor, Gion Classroom) with Zoom access available.

Format & Venue

  • Time: 18:00–19:30 (JST), unless stated differently
  • Location: CIEE Kyoto, 6th Floor, Gion Classroom and Zoom (hybrid)

Dear Dr. Aherne,

Timon Screech’s talk on Rokuhara sounds fascinating and I would very much like to attend. For those of us in incompatible time zones (for me, 2am!), might a recording be made available?

Thank you.

Dear Lisa,
Many thanks for the opportunity expression of interest. I’m delighted and honoured to be inaugural speaker for the new CIEE series in Kyoto.
The talk is the first public step in a new project that will go on for a few years. So I hope to have the opportunity to speak on the same topic near you, or in a time zone that suits you, in the near future.
Best wishes
Tim Screech
