Hello,

I have a question about translations of units. At the beginning of many scholarly treatises there can be found a handy list of weights, measurements, and other Japanese units. I have always wondered if there is a standard source from which everyone is drawing (something like the Princeton Companion to Classical Japanese Literature), or does each scholar draw them up by themselves? (If so, what sources should one use? NKD?) Would it be considered strange to cite someone else's list when making one's own?

Thank you so much in advance for your insights!

Dear Leah,

You probably know this but just in case. A good resource that I have been using over the years is the Online Glossary of Japanese Historical Terms hosted by the Tokyo Historiographical Institute. It allows you to review some of the available options before--or instead of--coining your own terms. It is searchable in Japanese script and romanization and covers publications in multiple languages.
