Dear list members,

I'm wondering if there is any Chinese precedent that may have informed the early poetry criticism in older treatises like the 和歌九品, as well as early poetry competition judgments. That is, not criticism that talks about poetry's role in good government or having a Confucian bent, but criticism that is more about the feeling of the poem (using words like をかし, おもしろし, 優艶, and such).

Sincerely,
