Dear PMJS list members,

I wonder whether anyone could advise me on the advantages and disadvantages of the 日本歴史地名大系 versus the 角川日本地名大辞典 for a historian of early modern Japan. I am interested in purchasing institutional access to one, but probably not to both unless they complement each other to a great extent.

I have read the descriptions on the Japan Knowledge website (https://japanknowledge.com/contents/rekishi/index.html and https://japanknowledge.com/contents/kadokawachimei/index.html), but it would be helpful have the benefit of colleagues' experience. I have previously used the 角川日本地名大辞典 but not the 日本歴史地名大系.

Any advice would be welcome.

With thanks,

Rebekah

Dear Rebekah,

Hello. I think you have a difficult decision to make, because both reference works are excellent.

I recommend you take a look at the bibliographical guide at Columbia University (in this case written by Jordan Sand, revised by David Lurie, and updated by Federico Marcon) for a clear and succinct comparison of the two resources.

http://www.columbia.edu/~hds2/BIB95/ch13.htm#Heibonsha

I regularly use both, but tend to rely more on the Heibonsha series for my research (medieval Japan).

The Columbia guide is about two decades old now, but still remains a tremendously useful resource. I don’t know if we could match it, but perhaps PMJS could pool our resources together and provide a more regularly updated alternative.

Best regards,
Chris

Years ago in Henry Smith's graduate seminar in Japanese bibliography, we did brief reviews of geographical and historical dictionaries, among other reference works. Henry put the material on line here:

I don't know if you will find information that serves your purpose, but lots of good work went into the project so I send along the link.

Many thanks to all who replied to my question. Henry Smith's bibliography is new to me. What a great resource!
