Hi Clive,

No lessons have been learnt.  Global warming is accelerating.  The drivers of increased temperature, globally and regionally, need to be tackled.  Emissions reduction is caught in a zero sum game which nobody can win.  Urgent consideration must be given to direct cooling intervention with SAI, otherwise we'll hit 2C by around 2040, Arctic meltdown will be unstoppable, tipping points will reach a point of no return, and it will be too late to prevent an irreversible slide towards catastrophe for billions: food supply, water supply, and all the other things that Mark mentions.

This shows the prevention side for SAI.   But perhaps one should show the creative side, and sell SAI through the possibility of climate change reversal and planetary restoration, as PRAG has tried to do.  It could be considered a moral imperative, as we owe it to future generations.

Cheers, John

It wasn’t new then when Lynas wrote the book, but no lessons have been learned from repeating them because those making decisions don’t want to know, and refuse to learn.

They’re incapable of seeing the light:

Hi Tom,

That is certainly true for the US government, now a basket case.  It may be true for some other governments of the Western world.  But Canada, India, China and even perhaps the EU might see the light if we presented the light in the right light. 😀

Cheers, John

No, not a LED light, but the light that illuminates science, and shows that we need SAI to refreeze the Arctic and restore the planet to a healthy state.

John

P.S. Thanks to Glenn Weinreg for his video and drawing attention to climate restoration as a way to sell SRM.

P.P.S.  Mark Lynas does draw attention to the plight of corals as sea temperatures rise.

Until tens of millions die in discrete climate change-caused events, nothing much will happen, even if the anti-science were to leave immediately. My environmental advocacy colleagues tell me, "sure we have made progress, look at renewables." This is near-true. Incentives for renewables were created because of the modeled need for emissions reductions but, they have not been adopted because of climate change because there is neither positive or negative incentive to adopt. they have been adopted because they are more economic that fossil fuels.

These same colleagues however, do not see IRS 45Q as progress; almost all "believe" in the moral hazard and 45Q is nothing more than a license to emit even more greenhouse gases through enhanced oil recovery, regardless of how the science works.

Significantly overlooked however, this is an easy lift for the current U.S. administration. There is no "believing" in climate change needed. It's cash for the elite, for big fossil fuels; to "allow" them to keep burning. It's just another scam on this administration's long naughty list of scams on the American public, to give their rich friends more and more of our cash. This is why they are doing almost everything they do (except to stay our of jail), so that they can give their monied friends more of our tax money. This is what the brain donors are doing in Venezuela, giving the fossil fuel industrial complex more of their life blood, with the cost born by civilian's taxes; the finest kind of money for those with more money than God: OPM (other people's money).

IRS 45Q - this is the most fantastic climate change mitigation incentive offered yet, to give phenomenal sums of money to those who least need it. It is a climate change pollution program that did not see its demise under this anti-science administration but instead, this incentive was strengthened because it gives gigatons of our money to the richest people and entities in the world, Mission #1 for the dominant U.S. leadership cult.

Our current lawless administration in the U.S. just needs knocked upside the head to get the cooling mitigation incentive idea planted in their brains because they have not enough remaining grey matter remaining, after whatever it has been that has been eating their grey matter, to realize the perfect scam when they see it. They understand "pay to pollute." They understand that geoengineering is widely perceived to be a crutch to allow the continued burning of fossil fuels; which is after all just what they want. The fossil fuel industrial complex also understands that once the removal and injection infrastructure is in place for enhanced oil recovery, putting more CO2 in the ground than is required to recovery product generates revenues far beyond costs. Creating net negative fossil fuels with enhanced oil recovery is an easy leap, guaranteed to earn lots of cash. And once again, it's the finest kind of cash; tax money from the peasants.

Important: temporary emergency climate pollution mitigation is not geoengineering, it is temporary emergency climate pollution mitigation. Geoengineering is the really bad things we have done to this planet in the last few centuries to create climate change. What needs done is climate pollution mitigation. Geoengineering scares the heck out people because they don't know what it is and have been conditioned to think it is dangerous but, we have been around pollution treatment for centuries, so we know what pollution treatment is and we are unafraid. Humankind's predominant treatment regime for pollution is not elimination of the source. We almost always emit pollution to create the things we need, and then we treat the emitted pollution so we can be safe.

How do we as a society treat other forms of already emitted pollution so we can be safe? We do it exactly like we will treat climate pollution in the short term; by masking its presence to reduce its concentration (warming) below an acceptable safe level. Masking of air pollution keeps us safe from particulates, toxics, viruses, and spores. The solution to pollution is dilution. One of the most common forms of wastewater pollution treatment for generations has been mixing it with stormwater to dilute it enough so we are safe from acute toxic concentrations. Filtering it too -point of use water filters; municipal potable water treatment almost always uses filters as the first step in treatment -just like temporary climate cooling treatment is the first step in the climate pollution treatment train. Stormwater runoff pollution treatment widely uses sand filters (masks for our streams and rivers) to keep our waterways safe, so that we can be safe.

What needs done are extremely common techno-strategies that we use to mitigate pollution. We have been using global cooling pollutants to mitigate (accidentally) for climate pollution-caused warming for two centuries. So, why did we not use masking and filtration for climate pollution to start with? Because a long time ago our global climate culture made a good sounding, but not so good and sound decision that we could easily and rapidly stop burning fossil fuels to be safe, instead of treating climate pollution like we have been treating almost all pollution for centuries. Why will this current administration not treat temporary emergency climate pollution mitigation the same way as they are treating all other things associated with climate pollution regulation they are trying to eliminate? It's money pure and simple. They will implement cooling incentives as soon as someone points out to them the enormous amounts of money involved - even more than it costs, just like IRS 45Q. And, the pay will be anti-science proof because its administrators will not base the pay on science, they will base the pay on greed and the greatest cash withdrawal from American citizens that can be accomplished.

Happy Holidays from Texas y'all,

Dear Bruce,

Thanks for your conclusions.

Until tens of millions die in discrete climate change-caused events, nothing much will happen, even if the anti-science were to leave immediately.

Nothing much will happen. I can underwrite that, however I cannot see that “anything will happen when tens of millions die in discrete climate change-caused events.” Well, you did not say that, but it was implied.

In the remaining 75 years of this century climate change will grind forward, temperatures and ocean levels will rise, storms, floods and deserts will increase… Humans will adapt, population will peak, renewables will soar, coal, then oil, then gas will fade out. In the end there will be around 7 billion people left on around 95% of the current land mass. Some regions will suffer more than others, think of the Netherlands or the Arctic. It is all quite predictable.

I have grown, over the past 5 years (we founded AMR in 2021), from a climate activist to a climate pessimist. However I don’t think that the events will be catastrophic. The feeling will remain very much like it is now, with intermittent catastrophes, then some relief, then some bad news again. Politics will remain the same chaos they are now.

A very helpful book to read is Gaia by James Lovelock. He says that earth is a living organism which regulates itself. I think that that’s inherently true, but Gaia’s regulation may work smoothly without humans, so I would not rely on it.

Over the past 5 years we have developed climate cooling technology which is now ready to deploy. It would cost 0.50 USD per tonne of CO2e and it is safe and natural. Nobody is interested.

I conclude with your quote: Nothing much will happen.

Regards

A recent report by the University of Exeter and IoFA, Planetary Solvency – Finding Our Balance with Nature (2025), presents a similar stark warning: global temperatures could rise by up to 3°C—an increase that would trigger catastrophic damage to ecosystems, economies, and human life itself. And yet, silence prevails. Why are people and policymakers not reacting with the urgency this crisis demands? Is it disbelief? Is it cognitive denial—the assumption that climate devastation will somehow spare them and their families? Even the beneficiaries of the status quo—the fossil fuel companies and their shareholders—are not exempt from the fallout. They know the risks; they understand the science. But the system continues unchanged. It is nothing short of baffling..

This is precisely why a new movement—rooted in public awareness, political pressure, and science-based action—is urgently needed.  We cannot wait for policymakers to wake up on their own. Change will come only when ordinary citizens, students, scientists, and communities demand it..
