Dear Pino-ists,
I have got a Pino from 2011, I am considering changing the rear wheel for a rear hub motor. Has anyone done that before? What brand/model would you recommend?
I don't need something, just an extra push when going uphill with 2 kids in a trailer...
Thanks a lot,
Antoine

Hi  Antoine,

We did he same thing in 2019. We went for a Heinzmann direct drive system. It works brilliantly (with a little modification of the sensor ring on the crank so we could retain the triple chainset). Highly recommended and certainly cheaper than buying a whole new bike.

Good luck!

Neil.

This is the system we stuck with after trying Shimano and some geared hubs:
We’ve used it in the US, NZ, and throughout Europe.
Especially with a tandem, a crank mounted motor adds that ‘second stoker’ strain to chain, chainwheels, and rear cassette.
A rear hub motor reduces the strain and wear closer to a single bike

Just to echo Larry’s point on the benefits of rear hubs, it’s definitely the best technology. In fact the main chain failed once just under human power when we were 3 miles from home and we were able to travel back on the rear motor alone - try doing that with a crank drive!.
