Not much activity on PinoTalk.  Perhaps Pino riders congregating elsewhere?

could't get either our AL of Ti ready in time for a few recent rallies 'round the British Isles, Germany, and France.so we took a classic Viewpoint HiLo we were thinking of buying

the captain's cockpit was way way too short fore aft so most of the dime i rode elbows-on-bars

not a bad way to go
but we prefer the Pino layout and it's shorter too

Hi

Now you mention it yes it’s been quiet on pinotalk for months now.

We are selling lot’s of electric Pino’s in fact over 2/3rds of our sales of Pinos are electric.

Sounds great John and Ruth
We sold a number of those too and used one ourselves on trips where we could hire a STEPS battery
but for travelers we are using a powerful Motorwheel that pairs with special separable and stackable battery packs that travel in carry on bags.
Cheers

Much earlier this year we saw our first Pino STEPS on a local trail.  It was a father with his physically disabled teenage son,  a perfect pairing of both their Pino and electric assist!  Personally,I have mixed feelings about ebikes for physically able-bodied folks, primarily since many of the users on the local trails don't seem to realize their assisted speed doesn't always mix well with the unassisted folks, particularly on busy crowded paths.  Then there are the ebikes owners who have modified their bikes to not have to pedal at all, making them little more than electric mopeds.  Mix in dockless electric scooters and bikes it makes for a sometimes chaotic scene but the world changes even if I don't want it to.  However,  the day will come when my physical ability will be in decline and I will embrace electrical assistance to continue to enjoy cycling and the outdoors.

E-bikes in the Uk are restricted to 15 mph max speed as opposed to the USA which is 20mph and the mid drive systems such as Hase use can’t be modified either. I’m sure some people do ride illegal systems over here, but e-bike usage in the UK isn’t very great compared with the rest of Europe.

The one thing that strikes us about our customers who buy e-tandems is that they use them more than they did their non e version, because to be quite honest it’s a lot more fun especially if you live where we are in the Yorkshire Dales.

John and I have been riding a Pino Steps for the last year, and John is a hard man he rides usually 5 times a week, mtb mainly and road, in fact he’s fitter than he’s ever been, but he likes riding the Pino Steps with me, the electric assist helps take a bit of the load off one of his slightly dodgy knees.

Ruth

could not agree more Chris.
We use our Pino for support on the tandem rallies and when we are in places where we must follow the average riders as sweep mechanics.
Places like NZ and the hills of Scotland don't allow us to keep up otherwise.

Hi all,

Jen and I have just finished 107 days in Europe, many of them on our Pino. We pretty much sought out flat terrain, and had wonderful riding in Puglia, Belgium, Netherlands, Copenhagen and the German Danube. We also some had some slightly hillier stuff in Northern Italy, Tuscany and Bavaria.

For next year, we’re planning to buy a Pino STEPS which will allow us to broaden where we ride. Ruth, we should talk ...

We travel with our Pino, Daisy, on the back of a VW camper, and I have become expert at taking her apart and putting her together again.

Regards,

Doug

very exciting travels.
We, too, have a VW (2002 Golf) and carry our Pino on the back.
We just upgraded to a $79 hitch mount peg-style and before that used a $25 strap on rack we have had since the 70's.
We've never taken it apart,(the Titanium is a non separable) and with a slight tilt comes out about the same width as the mirrors.

Hi Doug

What great photos, come and have a test ride. Once we started riding a Pino I never wanted to go back to a regular tandem, and once we rode the electric assist I didn’t want to go back to the regular Pino.

Thanks for the offer to loan a battery!
We hope to take advantage.
On a recent trip the entire Pino was confiscated due to my employee leaving the battery on
It made it thru US screening unfortunately
But was hold up in Frankfurt 3 weeks
While we mailed a key to a local recumbent maker HP who unlocked the battery and sent the tandem to us for $125
cost to send battery was twice that so we let them keep it as a gesture for retrieving the bike
We now use travel batteries but so far they  only work with motor wheels

We spent July, August and about a third of September cycling from home, through France to the Med, then on to the International Tandem Rally. We cycled through two heat waves but it was never not hot! – there were only four days when it rained on us at some point. At the end of Sept we attended the JD Tandems weekend and had a brilliant time, despite the inclement weather, then I succumbed to the British autumnal damp and developed a cold, which I couldn't shake off, so much of October was spent sniffling and not riding. In November I fitted a Bafang mid-drive to the Pino, along with a 17.5Ah battery and since then we've popped up to Scotland, where the new e-assist had a good workout and performed impeccably.

Hi Bob,

Looks wonderful. i’ve enjoyed following your adventures on Strava. Tell me, which Bafang drive did you choose (how many W)?

Thanks

Hi Doug,
It's the 36V 250W BBS01B Bafang mid drive electric motor kit with a 17.5Ah battery. In the UK we are limited to 250W on the road, to stay legal, but in all honesty, that's enough. There's enough power to pull away from a standstill, using the thumb throttle, then start pedalling. Great for hill starts too, which can be tricky on a Pino. The speed limiter is 15mph/25kph but this is better than our average. On the flat we don't really need any assistance unless we are with faster riders and need to keep up but I've been enjoying having it on full power for much of the time on these initial rides. I opted for the 46T chainring – others are available – and coupled to a Rohloff with 15T sprocket, that gives us enough top-end to spin up to about 30mph on a descent with the lowest gear enough to keep pedalling with the assistance from the motor. We've ridden over 50 miles on a single charge and still had some juice left.

Were you able to retain the left side freewheel to independent pedaling for your stoker with the Bafang?

Bob Bending

Yes Doug, although I had to leave off a threaded cover to the locknut on that side, as the freewheel fouled it when the crank was tightened down. I used the original Hase crank and freewheel.....

P1010948.jpg

...which meant I had to find a plain right hand crank – eg. a stoker's front crank, but you can only buy the paired items, so for the time being I've got the old spidered crank minus chainrings on that side. I did find a trials RH crank without a spider but it's wider than the original part. I might put a plea in the next issue of the Tandem Club Journal, and on the Facebook page to see if anyone has one.

The Hase crank is square tapered square pattern, whereas the Bafang cranks that come with it are square tapered diamond pattern, so you can't mix and match Hase/Bafang.

P1010949.jpg

P1010958.jpg

I've also extended the mudflap on the front guard with a piece of plastic milk bottle for now – I have a mudflap coming – as the motor collects a lot of crap off the lanes around here...we live in an agricultural area, so often mud on the back lanes.

Hi everyone,

With all this talk of electrification, I just want to give a hearty recommendation to Dan at Quest 88 in Shrewsbury who retrofitted a rear wheel Heinzmann drive to our Pino this summer. I’ve been putting it off for years but I’m getting older and my son (who has cerebral palsy) is now 17 and not getting any lighter! It works beautifully and on a relatively flat route using low level assist only when needed we managed over 70 miles and still had half the battery left. Definitely 50 miles possible even on hillier routes and being a bit braver with the assist to keep up with my wife! We were able to retain the freewheel and the full triple chainset too so when I ride with my wife as stoker we can still ride with zero assist if we choose. Now all we need is some decent weather again.

Neil.

We’re on our 33d Santana Tandem rally with our Pino, sixth with motor assist, 5th with Falco motor wheel, and  second in New Zealand where hills abound .
We gave up on STEPS since there was no way to fly the battery.
The Falco is a simple 5 phase direct drive workhorse with wireless console or phone-controlled operation and only a short power cord from a seat mounted battery to rear motor wheel
Like with everything on our bikes we insist on simple
