Are you sure? I haven't used an '8 in 45 years, but I remember us just hooking the ASR-33s up and that the tape reader just operated in parallel with the keyboard (and it acted as though you were simply typing, at a blazing 10cps.) We used the things with current loop, though, not RS-232.
By the way, I recently discovered it seems to be impossible to find EIA RS-227 1" paper tape any longer anywhere at all. Am I mistaken or is there still a source out there somewhere?
