Hi, Happy New Year! I am working through the Unix systems in chronological order. But I can't login to Unix 7.

The boot.ini file says to;
Type 'boot' (there is no prompt)
Then, 'hp(0,0)unix'
UNIX will boot into single-user mode. Log out (ctrl-d) to go into multi-user.

I got into single user mode and then did Ctrl-D to go into multi-user mode, but I am asked for a login and password. root/system system/system user/user etc. don't work.

Can someone please provide the system login and password, and any user ones that are known. Or is multi-user mode 'user' by definition??

The PiDP11 manual refers to a.papnet.eu/UNIX/v7/files/doc/03_beginners.pdf and http://a.papnet.eu/UNIX/v7/files/doc/ but the website is dead. Where are these files now?

Thanks! Andrew

Hi Andrew,

try root and no password, ie just enter. That should work.

Cheers, happy new year all :-)

Syste is right, but here’s a little secret.  When you get to the single user prompt, you can set the root password with the passwd(1) command or even just edit /etc/passwd and erase anything in the password field and save it.

Sent from a handheld expect more typos than usual

Got it! It is root/root (root with no password didn't work)

Thanks Syste
