Since this software product changed its pricing model / tiers, I've not been able to
get on the GUI for my Pi. I luckily remembered my password, so I can ssh into the pi.
Does anyone have a link to instructions on how to re-register my pi with VNC at the
free tier?

I suggest that you move to using Raspberry Pi Connect instead. It's free, officially supported by the Raspberry Pi foundation and, as a plus, it gives you access to your device from any place in the world (even outside of your internal network). This article explains how to move to it: https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/raspberry-pi-connect/.

I hope this helps.

Well, the Pi inside my pidp11 is a rpi3B.  RPiConnect only runs on PI4 or higher.
I bought a 4 when it first came out, it's not doing anything useful right now, but I'm
not sure it will fit in the case with the heatsink on.  Unfortunately it's not letting me ssh in at all right now,
connection refused.  Will power cycle it to see if I can get in.

Oh, I should have asked that! Another option that is free is RealVNC, and this will work on a 3b. You can install the server with: sudo apt-get install RealVNC-vnc-server.

There are RealVNC clients for every operating system out there. But it will only give you access from within your network (probably the same as what you had before).

Not true.  As long as you're running Bookworm or later you can set up Pi Connect.  I have it running just fine on a Pi 1b (!!!) so you can definitely get it run on a Pi3.

I ended up using the imager to put a fresh copy of bookworm 64 bit on the pi 4B, so now I can add the Pi Connect. It didn’t help that I got the wrong ip address (it’s the line AHEAD of the MAC address, not after in output from Nmap). I was trying to log into the HP printer downstairs.

Next task will be to see if the pi4 fits the gpio pins with the heatsinks installed. It’s the kind with the pair of fans on top, which I didn’t need after applying the firmware fix. image0.jpeg

You gave me a real chuckle there! Fortunately you didn't try a web browser, or you would have been surprised when a web page appeared to run on your raspberry pi :)

I had a Pi 4 with a similar heatsink originally, and it fit well, but I covered it with a layer of thin cardboard, in an abundance of caution to prevent it from shorting the LED solder points. The Pi 5 brings a thinner heatsink, and that one is even better.

Just want to confirm that the Raspberry Pi Connect worked fine on the Pi3 B+ after I reimaged the system with 64 bit Bookworm distro.
I managed to break the whole desktop by trying to set the keyboard to mac.  Need to leave that unchanged.
Also took way too long to figure out the keyboard map was set to UK —‘@ ‘ and ‘“‘ were exchanged and I couldn’t understand why it wasn’t accepting my password.  Had to change both locale and keyboard to en_US before it took effect.
All Pi problems, not pidp11 problems , but hope nobody else needs to spend as much time as I did banging my head.
