Hello.

I'm having problems with FTP - reading other comments, part of a very long story.

I have set up an FTP client and an FTP server on my Windows 11 laptop, and also on the Raspberry Pi.

I can FTP from the Windows 11 laptop to the Raspberry Pi, and vice versa. What I can't do it to FTP between the Windows 11 laptop and the PiDP-10, running ITS, in either direction.
  • Trying to FTP from the PiDP-10 to the Windows 11 laptop connects, but fails when trying to do a directory listing.
  • Trying to FTP from Windows 11 to the PiDP-10 conects, but doesn't go anywhere. Eventually the connection is closed by the remote host.
When my PiDP-10 boots, it makes an error message: DETACHED JOB -> 4, USR:TARAKA CNAVRL 15:02:15. The book says (page 88 onwards), that the error message involves COMSAT. Mine doesn't, it says CNAVRL.

Is there a good way to get text files on and off PiDP-10 at this time?

Are you able to FTP from your Raspberry Pi and ITS?  If not, that is where you need to start.  FTPing from your Windows Machine through your Raspberry Pi to your ITS may require some firewall/routing setup.

Regarding your detached job issue, the actual program being run is COMSAT (.MAIL.;COMSAT LAUNCH).  However, it is being launched as a daemon by a link in the CHANNA directory (CHANNA;RAKASH CNAVRL).  This is a link to .MAIL.;COMSAT LAUNCH.  There is also an hourly job (DRAGON;HOURLY CNAVRL) that runs. That is also a link to .MAIL.;COMSAT LAUNCH.

So, in short, COMSAT is dying.  You probably didn’t make all the fixes that I reported on in an old thread regarding the IP address of your ITS.

The “good way” to get text files on and off ITS, is through FTP.  So you need to first get FTP working between your Pi and ITS.  That involves correctly setting up the network.  Once you have that working, we can tackle the Windows -> Pi -> ITS FTP.

Thanks for that very  clear explanation. That the error message said CNARVL rather than COMSAT is what threw me.

You probably didn’t make all the fixes that I reported on in an old thread regarding the IP address of your ITS.

Indeed, I didn't make any of those changes. But now I know what's going on, I will make them tomorrow.

Francis.

I can’t make ordinary ftp work, even with Eric's changes, but reading the manual (!) reveals mlftp.

/opt/pidp10/bin/mlftp -w its test ~/test

Copies a file (test) from the current directory of the RPi to the .TEMP. directory on ITS.

Similarly

/opt/pidp10/bin/mlftp -r its "test list ppb;" test.list

Copies a file (test list) from the directory ppb: on ITS to a file test.list in the current directory on the RPi.

When I say "the manual", I mean here:

I have made some progress. ITS no longer complains about CNVRAL, it complains about COMSAT.

:)

I have followed the instructions on page 90 onwards.

As far as I can tell, I am here:
  1. Updated host table H3TEXT, compiled, no errors
  2. Fixed the COMSAT file, variables changed, file purified, no errors
  3. Generate COMSAT table, error message
  4. Fix COMSAT mailing file, no errors
Part 3:

comsat $j
$l .mail.;comsat launch
debug/ -1                            ; was zero, now -1
mfinit$g                              ; produces error

Expected message:

:$ File Directory Initialization successfully completed

Received message:

:$ Error (s) during EQV file compilation! Read STATS or error file.

But I don't know what STATS is, or where the error file is.

Thoughts please.

I’ve seen this before — especially when I tried to set up comsat from scratch the first time. Can you show me a listing of your .MAIL. directory?

Oh, I forgot to say .MAIL.;STATS > is where all error messages and status (and log) information is written. Does that file exist? If so, look at it and post the last 50 lines of it.

Ok. Your mail isn’t going out (all those MAIL NNNNN files). What does STATS > say?

Can you provide me the values of TCPGAT, DOMGAT, and BUGHST for COMSAT?  See below:

ES>foo◊j!
ES>◊l (Load Bin File) ◊
DSK: EJS; FOO BIN    .mail.;comsat launch
ES>tcpgat/'NEW◊:   25577,,750651   =25577750651
domgat/   25577,,750651   =25577750651
bughst/   SHOWQ+47,,PAT+6   =30052000144

Note that after DDT prints out the location of, say, tcpgat, hit the = sign so that the value is displayed in octal.

What is your host’s IP address?

What is your ITS’ IP address?

sys◊j!
ES>impus3=30052000144

(Just type “IMPUS3=“ and it will display the value in octal).

TCPGAT and DOMGAT should be the same, and should be the IP address of your mail host (e.g. the SMTP server on your host).

BUGHST should be the IP address of your ITS and should match the value of IMPUS3 (the symbol’s value) in ITS.

sorry for the weird rendering of the esc characters there. ESCj is $J and ESCl is $L, where $ is alt mode, or typed as ESC.
