Hi,
I recently submitted an article to a journal where I included kegg pathways predicted with picrust2 and visualized with STAMP. I received a message from the editorial support department that "We would appreciate obtaining permission to use the KEGG software from the Kanehisa laboratory. To obtain this permission, please submit the form at the following URL: www.kegg.jp/feedback/copyright .html.” Has anyone encountered something like this? Do I really need kegg permission when using picrust2?

Thanks in advance!

Best,
Paula

Hi Paula,

The KEGG details distributed with PICRUSt2 are based on annotations distributed by the IMG database. IMG needs permission and/or a license to distribute this information (which presumably they have, although I don’t see that on their website).

It’s always nice to get permission from KEGG to use the database for academic usage, so that wouldn’t hurt, but it shouldn’t be strictly necessary as the database is based on IMG annotations.

Cheers,

Gavin
