If I downloaded the Desktop version from a January post from this year, I still get the latest updates if I use the link correct?

I've been having some lockup issues trying to play the Mephisto engine. I move 5-10 times and the game locks up on the engines move. It's happened the three matches I attempted play.
Here's a video, showing it happening...

I just tested the Desktop image in my Pi5 and had no issues. I also played Mephisto I (I assume that's the engine you mean - I couldn't see the display well enough although you aren't using custom artwork which should show by default) and finished the game (I lost on move 23) on level 1. Not sure why it would lock up for you. Make sure the book is set to 'no book'. Perhaps try playing using MAME alone (with a mouse).

Yes, the links have not changed.

I should have also mentioned I did an 'apt full-upgrade' as well and no issues. There were around 228 packages to update. :^)

It played fine on the RPi using the WEB interface and not the board... I lasted 55 moves against Mephisto and got mated.

Perhaps a piece recognition issue? I just played on my Pi4 and finished the game, this time victorious. And used a different board (Chessnut Air+ this time, Millennium ChessLink last time).

Maybe there is something in the log. Set it to debug and see if you can make it fail.

I was able to play with the board (Mephisto Dallas 1986) with no issues... I set it to 'no book', it had been on 'varied'. I did NOT use the artwork.

Hi,

the image doesn't work with Pi Zero 2 W. Are there special images or how can a build a special version?

Is Picochess still using the X11 interface? The desktop seems smoother and I'm not seeing the delay in loading some apps (e.g., the accessories editor).

Yes. It still uses X11, mainly due to the use of xdotool. I don't think Wayland has a good alternative yet but I haven't looked in a while.

I don't (yet) own a Pi Zero 2 W but the Lite image might work. Running the Desktop or Wine image would be almost impossible due to the limited 512 MB RAM. The Lite image is made for the DGTPi which has a Pi3b inside and even that has 1 GB RAM. You would probably need a large swap file which isn't available on the initial boot of my images since they are shrunk.

You could probably make your own image using instructions found in another thread (do a search). Not sure the results would be worth it though. Maybe someone else has experience they can share.

Henri pointed out an issue with the /opt/picochess/engines/aarch64/engines_ini/all_retro.ini file. I forgot to remove SciSys Superstar 36K ('sstar36k') when it was renamed in MAME to Saitek Turbostar 432. So if you have the entry in your retro.ini file and you try to select it PicoChess will crash. I'll remove it and the corresponding files on the next image update. In the meantime, don't use the [ mame/sstar36k] entry in your retro.ini (or don't select it). I have attached an updated all_retro.ini file.
